29 Jun Introducing Our Members: Carrie Fernandes

Where do you work and what is your title? University of Connecticut as the Associate Director – Office Service and Student Loan Programs

Why did you enter the field of Financial Aid? I knew someone who worked in the field who had a position opening on their campus – I’ve been in financial aid ever since!

Most exotic place you’ve visited? Saba, a very small island in the Netherlands Antilles. My sister lived there while her husband attended medical school so I went out there for 6 weeks and completed an internship with the Saba Conservation Foundation.

What is your biggest pet peeve? Traffic; people who don’t get to the point quickly

What do you do when you are not working? Run; hike; binge watch NetFlix (most recently completed the entire X-Files series)

If you had the power, what would you change in the Financial Aid field?   I would eliminate administratively burdensome regulations (i.e. SULA)

What advice would you give to someone new to the industry? Hang on! Financial aid is an ever-changing industry when it comes to regulations, programs, and politics so it is never dull! It also can be a very fulfilling career assisting students and families reach their educational goals.

Are you a dog or cat person? Dog – I have a four year old black Labrador Retriever mix from the Waterford Humane Society.

Where do you call home?  Ledyard, CT

What is something your colleagues would be surprised to know about you? I originally went to school for meteorology so that I could be a TV weatherwoman.
